Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was required to halt operations for several hours when multiple of them floated into the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations affecting six thousand travelers, with authorities cautioning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the aviation facility.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
Regarding inquiries concerning why smugglers utilize a technique that proves especially affected by weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Atmospheric equipment are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are less expensive than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that these practices become unprofitable and present no risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during an era marked by increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Parallel situations in nearby states have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
