The city's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to take up residence in the traditional Gracie Mansion, departing from the affordable apartment that sparked debate throughout his run for office.

A Traditional Abode

Dating back to 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the official residence for most New York City mayors after the World War II era.

Yet, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a key policy, hesitated to declare he would live there right away after his electoral win in November.

"This decision was based on our family's safety and the need to directing my full attention on implementing the affordability agenda voters voted for," the Mayor-Elect declared in a statement.

Thanking a Neighborhood

His home was in the Queens borough of Astoria, a community renowned for its vibrant immigrant populations and global cuisine.

"To the people of Astoria: my gratitude for demonstrating what is great about New York City," he noted.

"Even though I'm moving there, it will forever remain inside me and my efforts as mayor," he added.

Campaign Controversy

During his election campaign, Mamdani connected his core platform – to freeze the rent – to his own housing situation.

Yet his critics, mainly ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for living in the rent-stabilized unit despite the fact that he came from a prominent family.

Not All Mayors Stayed

Some mayors have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire entrepreneur, chose to live in his personal mansion on Manhattan's Upper East Side throughout his tenure, which concluded in 2012.

In his view, Bloomberg argued it should be a venue for civic gatherings, and championed an extensive renovation of the aging mansion.

A Vastly Different Setting

When Mamdani moves into Gracie Mansion near his first day on 1 January, he will experience a setting far removed from his previous Astoria digs.

With its butter yellow paint, forest green window covers, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home overlooking the East River.

Internally, the first floor of the classically designed mansion is furnished to reflect the home's original era.

The property, which reportedly has five bedrooms, also boasts enhanced security to secure the mayor and his family.

Haunted History

Some residents have alleged that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.

Chirlane McCray, the wife of previous mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that doors occasionally opened and closing inexplicably, and the floors emitted odd sounds.

The departing mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "It doesn't matter the skeptics say," he insisted in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."

Affordable Housing Lifeline

The apartment he is leaving is rent stabilised, which means the city regulates on how much landlords can increase rent each year.

Tenants see such units as valuable lifelines as the cost of housing exceeds what many can afford.

It was reported Mamdani was paying approximately $2,300 each month for his apartment.

According to the property website Zillow, the median rent for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $3,500 a month.
