Whenever a significant prize-giving event draws close, there’s always a demand for introducing additional classifications to acknowledge overlooked contributions and satisfy the spirits of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.
Another commentator has already made supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are board games, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward since similar to single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand is the most urgent and significant. The demand is this: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; it’s very subjective, and inevitably spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. But it is a necessary evil for the industry of video games, showing incredible range they barely qualify as a single art form.
To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, specific award classifications remain vital.
Present Award Structure
Leading game ceremonies currently feature genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these classifications effectively encompass numerous genres, allowing placement for most games within them.
Not so for puzzle games. No suitable classification appears to put them. Consider three of this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.
Recognition Challenges
Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly that have no home in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.
- An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated for anything that year
- A different innovative game received no nominations that year
- A beloved organization game was overlooked that year
- Just some logic titles managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories
Value of Brain-Teasers
Commonly they're small games, yet the craft of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as most popular titles globally and have been for many years.
The famous puzzle experience rivals famous sandbox experiences for the title of best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, while interacting with almost every other genre.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. You could fill five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.
To emphasize again, these are games without proper classification in important events. Logic title developers are working at the hard edge game development, developing some of essential manifestations of the video game form. Just like movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay decades.
