The British designer Antony Price, the visionary British fashion designer responsible for many legendary styles associated with David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has sadly died aged 80.

His reputation was built on his architectural shapes and dramatic aesthetics, including the light-hued ensembles that became famous from the iconic band Duran Duran's classic music video for "the song Rio".

"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message on social media."

This news arrives just weeks after he presented his most recent collection in London, his first in more than 30 years. Artist Lily Allen showcased a dress inspired by the famous black velvet "dress" historically worn by Diana, Princess of Wales.

A Lasting Legacy

A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price relocated to London at the start of the 1960s to study at the renowned Royal College of Art.

A year after graduating, he commenced his career designing men's fashion at the company Stirling Copper and was the creator of the tight, button-detailed trousers that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger famously wore during the band's Gimme Shelter tour in the late sixties.

He launched his own brand in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show opened with looks from supermodel Jerry Hall, who later wore the bridal gown Price specifically designed for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.

Working with Legends

A key creative partner of the late David Bowie, Price created the iconic jacket the singer wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His signature ability to blend elements of men's and women's fashion along with his technical proficiency in crafting sculptural silhouettes cemented his status as a "one-of-a-kind talent," in the words of the British Fashion Council.

By the 1990s, he started creating ensembles for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, including several ensembles for her American tour following her marriage.

Following a profession lasting half a century, Price staged what would be his last show in London just last month in conjunction with the design house 16Arlington.

  • Defined Shapes: The core of his aesthetic.
  • Theatrical Flair: Defining an era of music fashion.
  • Gender-Fluid Fashion: Blurring lines between clothing for men and women.
  • Working with Stars and Royalty: From David Bowie and Mick Jagger to Queen Camilla.

The industry laments the passing to a authentic original whose influence on fashion and music remains profoundly felt.
