Nicolas Sarkozy to Pen Prison Memoir Detailing Two Dozen Days Incarcerated

Nicolas Sarkozy is preparing a memoir next month called Notes from a Cell, which recounts his time served in custody.

The revelation was made just 11 days following the ex-leader gained freedom as he appeals his conviction on charges of illegal collaboration regarding a scheme to obtain election campaign funds from the government of the late Libyan dictator.

Prison Experience: Solitary Musings

“Inside jail one sees little, and activities are scarce,” he reflects in a preview, suggesting the book is more about his musings while in isolation rather than wider commentary of the overcrowded and crisis-hit correctional facilities in the country.

“I forget silence, which is missing at the prison, where noise is endless commotion,” he adds. “The racket is alas constant. Yet, similar to barren lands, personal reflection is fortified while incarcerated.”

Release Hearing: Sharing the Struggle

At his release request hearing, he participated via screen from a room in prison, characterizing his incarceration as gruelling. He stated to the judge: “I must acknowledge the correctional officers, displaying remarkable compassion, and who helped make this nightmare tolerable – because it is a nightmare.”

“I never imagined that at 70 years of age, I’d find myself behind bars. It’s a hardship I must endure. I confess it’s hard, deeply straining. It leaves a mark every inmate due to its intensity.”

Unprecedented Situation

He, who led the nation for a five-year term, was the first ex-leader from the EU and the first leader since WWII in the French Republic to experience jail.

Prior to imprisonment he had said he would use his time to write a book.

Books in Prison

It is not certain if he found the opportunity to review and analyze the three books he brought with him: a two-volume biography of Jesus together with Dumas’s work The Count of Monte Cristo, in which a blameless person is imprisoned but escapes to exact retribution.

Prison Conditions

The former leader was placed in solitary confinement to protect him in a space of about nine sq metres featuring a personal bathroom in the Paris jail in Paris. Security personnel were stationed in an adjacent room.

Sources mentioned that he had eaten just yogurt during his stay because he feared any food may have been contaminated. Options were available for self-catering but he turned this down, based on unnamed sources. Unclear remains whether Sarkozy will write about his dietary choices.

Defense Viewpoint

His attorney, who saw him regularly each day while he was in prison, stated during proceedings he would be safer released compared to inside. “He received threats against his life, has heard screaming during nighttime and emergency responses next door when a prisoner self-harmed.”

Legal Proceedings

His incarceration began on 21 October following a Paris court sentenced him to five years in prison on conspiracy charges in connection with efforts to acquire campaign funds for his 2007 presidential race.

He maintains his innocence and has appealed against the verdict, and another court case set for the coming spring.
