Larian Studios Details Its Application of Generative AI for Upcoming Divinity
The team behind popular titles like Baldur's Gate 3 and Divinity: Original Sin recently teased its upcoming project, sparking significant excitement within the industry. However, subsequent statements from the studio's figurehead have brought nuance to the discussion, focusing on the studio's approach toward machine learning.
A Tool for Ideation, Not Replacement
In a latest clarification, Larian's director outlined that the team is utilizing AI technology for particular supporting purposes. These encompass developing PowerPoint slides, creating early-stage visual ideas, and drafting placeholder copy.
Notably, Vincke emphasized that the end material in the game will be created exclusively by real writers. "We are writing every line manually," he said.
We are continuously increasing our team of storytellers and are actively assembling dedicated writer rooms.
As visual development is being specifically called out — we right now have 23 artistic staff and have positions available for further creatives.
Everything we do is additive and focused on having people spend greater focus on making content.
Every AI system implemented properly is additive to a artist's process, never a stand-in for their skill.
Responding to Feedback and Defining the Path
The revelation of AI usage originally generated concern among some the community. In response, Vincke offered more clarification on social media.
"At Larian, we employ these tools to research ideas, similar to we use the internet and physical media," he explained. "During the very early ideation stages we use it as a rough outline for composition which we then replace with hand-crafted concept art."
He noted, "We've hired artists for their inherent skill, not for their capacity to replicate what a algorithm proposes."
Key Areas of AI Integration
Vincke had in the past outlined the studio's focused method to this technology, categorizing its use into primary areas:
- Automation of Tedious Tasks: This includes motion capture cleaning, voice editing, and technical processes like adjusting assets for various species.
- Fast-Tracked Experimentation: Using tools to speedily create basic mock-ups of mechanics to test concepts prior to complete development.
- Long-Term Aspirations: Exploring how machine learning could eventually enhance innovative reactivity, specifically in managing dynamic reactions in a complex RPG.
He clearly stated that central narrative areas — like visual art — are are in no way areas where the team is reducing artistic talent. On the contrary, Larian is actively hiring in these very roles.
"Our studio is neither releasing a game with any AI components, and we are certainly not looking at cutting creatives to replace them with AI," Vincke concluded.
