The United States monetary authority reduced interest rates on Wednesday, representing the second rate cut this year amid economic turbulence originating from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.
Move Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Central Bank
The move to reduce the key rate by a 0.25% to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with persistent inflation.
Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Shifts
In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the release notes. “Price increases has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”
Federal Closure Complicates Central Bank’s Task
The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the closure.
Information Shortage Affects Monetary Moves
The Federal Reserve usually studies BLS data to determine labor market conditions, such as the number of new jobs added to the market and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in early September, before the shutdown, and provided a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in August.
The figure of jobs added to the market in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.
Private Data Show Continued Slowdown
Though BLS was scheduled to release last month’s job market report in early October, it halted its publication when the shutdown started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the business segment cut 32,000 positions in September, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.
“Supply as well as demand for labor has declined significantly,” central bank head Jerome Powell said earlier this month, which he had previously said comes from immigration and tariff policies.
Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Rise
Though the bureau’s jobs report has been suspended, the bureau still released its price statistics for last month that indicated that costs are going up, although gradually. Costs increased 3% over the last year, the peak since January. In spring, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
